Week 17 - Lost in Cyberspace

I have been lost in cyberspace for the last 7 days. I forgot the password for my blog and had an bear of a time trying to sign in to access the blog. OMG what a nightmare.

All is well. I am BACK.

So, How was Christmas? Did you stay on plan? Christmas was much harder than Thanksgiving. I think it is because Christmas celebrations last for days whereas Thanksgiving is one day.

I have decided to go easy on myself this week. Last night I went to a party for a family member. I ate a little bit of the shrimp fried rice and 2 chicken wings. I had a diet coke and skipped the birthday cake. I brought a tote bag with some magazines and book so that I could keep myself busy while everyone else was CHOWING down. I sent all of the leftovers from Christmas Eve and Christmas home with family members. The only dangerous item in my house is the box of pralines that my neighbor gave me. I hid them on top of the fridge. Out of sight out of mind.

My brother gave me a new pair of NIKE sneakers for Christmas. YEAH! I love them. Thanks big brother.

It is good to be back on the blog and back in touch with you. Have a wonderful week. I will continue to share my weight loss journey with you in the new year.

Tomorrow I will have some recipe ideas for holiday dishes...until then have a Veggie Good Day,

Week 15

Happy Holidays, It has been hard keeping up with the blog during this busy holiday season. I will have to put a note somewhere to remind myself to do my daily entries.

I am on Week 15. I love WW. I am living proof that it really works. YEAH!!! If you are not a member maybe you should consider joining WW in the new year.

I plan on starting my annual candy making blitz. I find it to be a very relaxing and fun experience. Do not worry...I will not be tempted to eat the candy. I do not have much of a sweet tooth. I plan to make my regular heavenly hash and a low calorie WW has recipe. Yummielicious. The WW recipe does not include nuts. What? No nuts? I am going to have to splurge and add some nuts to the WW recipe. Ssh - do not tell my WW leader.

Tip: Reduce the calorie and fat content in your favorite recipes by using reduced fat/calorie items. Also, pack your snacks when you go shopping.

Suggestions: Kraft Fat Free Cheddar, Hellman's Fat Free Mayo, Soy Milk and Tofu Cream Cheese

Goal: Stay focused - Stay on Plan

Day 81 - Reaching out

Reach out to old friends. It is so easy to lose track of old friends. Today - pick up the phone and call someone. Make an effort to connect with long lost friends. It is important to stay connected.

I want to give a shout out to my dear friends JR and DH. You are always so supportive of my weight loss efforts. Thank you. To all of my sister friends - I love you.

A special hug to R-OB for her success on WW. Go- Girl!!!!

Day 80 - Looking Good At 80

Hello,

Can you believe that we have been blogging about weight loss for 80 days? This really has been a journey. I have learned a lot over the past 3 months.

1) WW really works
2) WW is easy and hard
3) You have to focus on daily affirmations and mini goals
4) There are a lot of low fat/reduced calorie meal options
5) It is easier to diet when you have a lot of support

Tip:  Fat Free Whip Cream is 0 points. You can add a dollop of whip cream to a bowl of fruit. Yummie.

Challenge: Give one of your favorite holiday recipes a  low fat/reduced calorie makeover.

Tip: Order sweet potato french fries instead of white potato fries. Order salad dressing on the side and skip the restaurant condiments on deli sandwiches. A lot of calories are hidden in mayonnaise and sauces.

Mini Goal: Try something new...a vegetable or fruit that you have never eaten before. I am going to try cooking acorn squash.

Days75-79 Building A Line of Defense

I have been on WW for 14 weeks and I am 2 pounds away from losing 10% of my body fat. YEAH!!! My next task is to build mental and physical lines of defense. First line of defense - Make sure that there are no high calorie foods or snacks in my house. I tried to clean out all the Thanksgiving leftovers and sweets. Second line of defense - Review my exercise routine. I need to make sure that I am working all of my muscle groups. Third line of defense - Avoid the temptation to eat on the run or away from home.

Real life example - I recently went to an event that involved a great deal of walking. At the conclusion of the walk I was thirsty and hungry. I also had a STRONG urge for a hamburger. I thought about the burger all the way to my car. I sat behind the steering wheel debating whether or not to stop at a restaurant for a burger or go straight home. I decided to go home and eat a veggie burger. I baked a cup of sweet potato fries and sprayed them with cooking spray to make them crispy.  I managed to avoid the urge to splurge by talking myself "off of the temptation ledge."

It is hard to make lifestyle changes BUT it is worth it.  Challenge: Avoid the urge to splurge this week. It will be difficult during the holiday season. Try to find low calorie versions of your favorite foods. We can do it.

Day 75 - In the middle of nowhere

Have you ever felt like you were stranded mentally in the middle of nowhere? That is how I feel today. How can I feel this way when my schedule is jammed with meetings and events. Why do busy people often feel like they are stuck in the middle of nowhere? Maybe it is because we move so quickly that we never really appreciate the moment. We never stop to smell the roses.

Today, I am going to carve out some quality time to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Sounds shocking right? I am going to come home and relax. What is the point in running yourself ragged?

Challenge: Focus on yourself. Treat yourself to an iced coffee or another low calorie treat. Go Christmas shopping or drive by your local Christmas light display. Focus on YOU.

Tip:  BE GOOD TO YOURSELF and have a Veggie Good Day,
FitandSlim4ever.

Days 71-74 - Whirlwind days winding down the year/D-Day remembered

Can you believe that the year is almost over? Christmas is around the corner. You better watch out. You better not pout - holiday sweets are coming to town. They tempt you when your sleeping, sugar plums dance in your head. Fat and calories will greet you so be good for goodness sake!

Today, we remember D-Day and the valiant troops that faced the Japanese war planes on December 7, 1941. My dad remembers listening to the radio announcement that Pearl Harbor was under attack. He will never forget hearing on the radio that the US fleet was on fire.

I have been to Pearl Harbor. It is a beautiful place. It is hard to imagine the air filled with smoke and the waters on fire. My heart breaks for the men that faced death in the dark waters on that infamous morning.

Take a few minutes today to give thanks for the brave men and women that protect our country at home and abroad. We owe them our thanks and respect.

Please keep Elizabeth Edwards and her family in your prayers. May she rest in peace.

Day 70 - Looking forward to the weekend

My blog for today is dedicated to GW and GRD. You are both dear friends and I am praying for you.

What are you going to do this weekend? I am hoping that the weather is cool and breezy. I am also looking forward to several events. I have already started planning my strategy. I will  have one drink and fill up on the salad and vegetables. I will try to stay away from sweets. How are you planning to survive the holiday party season?  Please write and share your strategy with us.

Day 69 - A whole new GIG. Week 13

I missed WW class this week because of work. My friend ROB picked up my materials. Thanks ROB - you are the best. I am very impressed with what I have seen so far. I think the new program is going to be very popular.

I am now in week 13. I have to work hard to stay focused and motivated about the plan. I am glad that WW is offering something new to generate excitement. Everyone needs to change lanes once in a while.

I look forward to learning new things. Stay tuned.

Day 68 - Dawg gone tired

Southerners love to say that they are "dawg gone tired." What does that mean? I say it all the time but tonight I feel it in my bones.  These are the days when we have to stay focused and connected to our support system. WE HAVE TO FIGHT TO STAY ON PLAN.

Challenge: Use your lifeline. Talk about your struggles. Reach out to friends and family.

Day 67 - Something is Fishy

I had a meeting at the Aquarium today. The meeting was in a conference room with a glass wall that allows you to view deep sea aquatic life. The tank is very large and filled with sharks, sting rays and lots of BIG fish. :) Guess what we had for lunch? That's right. You guessed it. FISH. Have you ever felt bad about eating a fish in front of a fish? LOL. I must say that the fish was absolutely wonderful. It was cooked to perfection.

I need to eat more fish. Do you have a favorite fish recipe? If so, please send it to us. We would love to hear from you.

Tip: Fish + Omega 3 = Very Good 4 You.

Challenge: Eat some fish today

Day 68 - A new era begins

Check out the new WW website. Today, WW introduced a new way of tracking and managing food intake. I love WW. It is simply the best way that I have found to manage my lifestyle change. Yes! I said it. Lifestyle change.

Yesterday Reverend Oscar challenged everyone to use the advent season to prepare for a new beginning. He asked us to let go of past hurts, resentments, frustrations, issues and move forward. I am going to take the next four weeks to plan for 2011. I am going to affirm my weight loss goals on a daily basis and work hard to master the new WW plan. I do not want to be in this "place" next year. I do not want to keep gaining the same 20lbs. I want to move forward with a renewed spirit and a SMALLER WAISTLINE. I can do it and so can you.

Challenge: Start making some resolutions. What will you do differently in the new year?

NOTE:  4 weeks until I wear my "JEANS" for Christmas. Will you be able to wear your "challenge outfit" on Christmas? The answer is YES - we can!!!!!

Day 65 - Cleaning out the fridge

The only way to not eat leftovers is to make sure that there are no leftovers. I gave my leftovers away. Yeah!  I had to do it. The dressing was vibrating in the fridge with a sign saying "YUMMIE." The last thing to go was a perfect looking apple pie. I tried to hide it but that darn pie kept peeking at me. LOL. I threw it out. I felt guilty about wasting food. It had to be done. No regrets.

I am looking forward to learning the new WW program. Stay tuned big changes are coming.

DAY 67 - Back in stride AGAIN -summary of day 64-67

Hello world, I have been off the blog for the past four days...dealing with Thanksgiving. How was the holiday? Did you manage to enjoy a great meal without going CRAZY? I give myself a B-.  I had a lot of dressing and it was worth it until I got on the scale last night. WHOA! I had a little fluid gain.   Today, I am  back in stride again. I am going to ramp up the fluids today and pump out some aerobic activity. I can do it and so can you. Let's get back on track.

On November 29, 2010 the new WW plan will be announced. I am really excited. Go to weightwatchers.com for more information.

Tip:  Stay alert by reading labels. Avoid foods that are high in sodium.

Challenge:  Staying on plan for the next 6 weeks. We can do this together.

Getting ready for the FOOD FEST

Thanksgiving is the biggest FOOD day of the year. I am really nervous about the big day. I keep wondering whether or not my will power will hold out. I do not want to consume the standard 4,500 calories consumed by most adults on turkey day.

I am sitting here in my kitchen blogging while cooking. Everything about the holiday revolves around FOOD. The family will gather around the food table, the cooks will be exhausted from cooking food and everyone will feel guilty for consuming so much FOOD.

All I can say is that I LOVE THANKSGIVING. Stay tuned. It should be interesting.

Pray for peace in our world, our country, our state and our community.

Day 62 and 63 combined/ Operation T-Day Countdown - 4 days

It is holiday time. I am trying to get myself ready for everything that comes with this busy time of year. Parties, impromptu meals and family gatherings are occasions when our will power is tested.

My WW leader recommends that we select items that we rarely have the chance to eat. In other words, identify the "only at Thanksgiving dishes." My must have item is dressing. I love dressing with gravy. I am planning to skip dessert and eat the dressing. I know this sounds crazy. I am going to allow myself about a cup or two of dressing. I just need it, want it and have to eat it on Thanksgiving.

I encourage you to start planning your operation T-Day strategy. ONLY THE STRONG WILL SURVIVE THIS BATTLE OF THE BULGE. CHARGE!!!!!

Note: I am substituting some of the ingredients in my dressing recipe.

Tip: Make a portion of your favorite holiday dish with reduced fat and low calorie ingredients.

Challenge: Lighten up a Thanksgiving dish. You can check the WW website for ideas.

Day 59 - The Business Lunch

I am starting to get the hang of "the business lunch." In my early WW days I dreaded having to meet with people over meals.

I have figured out a strategy:

1.   Ask for your salad dressing on the side.
2.   Divide your plate in 1/2 and only eat from 1/2 of the plate
3.   Have the wait staff remove your plate immediately after you have finished eating
4.   Skip the dessert
5.   Drink water with lemon
6.   Pass the nearest bread basket around the table and away from you

Sounds easy but it takes a lot of practice. Tip: Order broiled fish or baked chicken. These are generally safe options. Be careful with salad. A lot salads are packed full of hidden calories (like Houston's traditional salad /bacon, regular cheese, croutons and eggs. Squid, Seaweed Octopus salads are yummy but both have at least 500 mg per serving. I will save these salads for a special occasion.

Hang in there and work the lunch strategy,

Day 57 - Little Mary Sunshine

When I was in high school we put on a musical called Little Mary Sunshine. Mary sings "Don't be sad and gloomy, come and hark unto me and look for a sky of blue...or something like that. It has been more than 25 years so the words are a little fuzzy. Here is the point. When life throws you a curve ball hit it out of the park, when you find lemons in your bag instead of oranges make lemonade. When it is raining and stormy skip through the puddles in your bare foot. Life is hard but we must make the best of every situation.

Day 56 - Laugh at yourself

Yesterday, I wrote about loving yourself. Today, I encourage you to laugh at yourself. My father always says "do not sweat the small stuff." I think he is right. We can get so caught up in the "anxiety"of a situation or moment. It is okay to fall of the diet wagon every now and then. The important thing is to get back on plan and learn from your mistakes.

 Challenge: Laugh at yourself.

Tip: O magazine has a great article in the November issue about the spiritual journey of weight loss. In the words of my friend DH "this is a journey that you must take alone." Think about it.

Day 54 - Talk to yourself

It is okay to talk to yourself. I love the character Mr. Brown in Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns. He says "I said to myself - self?" I love that quote. Today, say something positive to yourself about yourself. Hug yourself and celebrate the wonderful life that God has given you.

Challenge: Write down one positive affirmation today, tomorrow and the day after. Then keep doing it until you reach goal.

Tip: Try doing this when you wake or before going to bed.

Day 54 - Veggie forever

Hi everybody,

I have really been working on eliminating meat from my diet. It is hard because I LOVE COW!!!!
The bottom line - to stay fit and trim 4ever you have to tilt to a veggie lifestyle. Sorry. I know you hate to hear it but fruit and veggies less meat = fitandslim4ever.

Tip:  The FitandSlim4ever Veggie Bowl - 1 bag of steam fresh brown rice, 2 cups fresh mushrooms, 1 bag of pic sweet green peas, 2 Jolly Green Giant Carrot and Broccoli single serves, 1 pack Jolly Green Giant asparagus tips, 2 tablespoons onion powder, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon adobe low sodium seasoning, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Mix and stir well and ENJOY all week. Pack this power booster in single serving glad storage containers. Girl FUEL.

Send me some of your VEGGIE FUEL recipes. How do you get through the day? I look forward to hearing from you.

Note: I am so thankful for the amazing people that allow me to be a part of their lives. I salute my friends and thank you for supporting and praying for me. Special thanks to JR, TBT, RT, CT, DH, RO, GW, TS and my wonderful aunt Joyce and the Big Fella.  I love you so very much.

Day 53 - STRESS and food

Have you ever had one of those days when you wanted to eat something really BAD FOR YOU? The urge to splurge usually occurs when we are having some difficulty. In order to curb these urges we need to develop some coping skills.  I am going to imagine myself in Tahiti...lying on the beach in a swimsuit that would STOP A SHARK ATTACK IN A BLOOD BATH. LOL. I will picture myself sipping delicious chardonnay and munching on lobster and crab. Yummmmlicious!

Tip: Picture yourself in a fabulous evening gown, bathing suit, leather pants - WHATEVER

Challenge - Make it happen. I am going to make it to Tahiti - sooner than later. I hope to see you there.

Have a beautiful week and a Veggie Good Day,
FitandSlim4ever

Day 52 - Sodium

I love kosher pickles. Unfortunately pickles will be going on the "do not mess with" list. Did you know that one medium kosher pickle has 1,181mg of sodium? I also love cottage cheese but one cup contains 819mg of sodium. I recently learned that pasta sauce is very high in sodium. Hunt's makes a low sodium tomato sauce that can be used to make spaghetti.

Here are some tips for cutting back on sodium:
- At restaurants, ask the chef to cut back on the salt when your meal is prepared
- Have salad dressings and condiments served on the side instead
- Buy additive free organic chicken and cut back on more than 400 mg of sodium
- season food with salt free spices like Mrs Dash

Tip: Try to avoid food items with more than 400mg per serving. Look for low sodium/salt portions with 140mg or less

Challenge: Shake things up but leave the salt on the table.

Day 51 - Surviving Anything and Coming Out Stronger

Yesterday, I went to the opening night of Colored Girls. The movie was an adaption of the famous play "For Colored Girls Who Have Committed Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enough." I first saw the play in college. It is a raw look at the lives of several African American women who are connected by work, family, situation and crisis.   The movie (just like the play) forces you to think long and hard about the choices that women make in order to survive, justify and ultimately honor their lives.

The movie made me think about my struggle with weight. I am the only one that can change my situation. God has already determined my destiny. NOW - it is up to me to make the most of the wonderful opportunities that our heavenly father has placed before me.

Challenge: This week I will not make excuses. I will justify and honor my life. I will make the most of every moment. I will live-love every minute of every day. I will take care of the incredible body machine that God created inside of me.  I will not sleep walk through my life.
I challenge you to do the same.

FITANDSLIM4EVER 50 DAY CELEBRATION

We are now 50 days into the blog. It has been a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for supporting my weight loss efforts. My dog has also lost weight. She is now 2 pounds lighter because there are no extra scraps coming her way. LOL

Are you ready for Thanksgiving. This is our next major hurdle. Over the next 3 weeks I am going to blog about holiday diet survival. We can do it.

We need to develop a game plan for surviving holiday parties and schedules. How should we handle the days when we have been out shopping all day?  It is so tempting to go to the food court. (refer to my fast food blog for the numbers)

I hope to share recipes and remedies. So let's get set for a great holiday season.

See you tomorrow and have a Veggie Good Day,
FitandSlim4ever

Day 49 - Dig a little deeper

Today I completed week 7 on WW. 13.5 lbs smaller. I have learned a lot of things during my time on WW.

First, I am so thankful to have the time and energy to get myself healthy

Second, Why did I end up here - AGAIN. How many times have I hit goal only to bounce back up the scale? I have been asking myself this question for weeks. Answer - old habits are hard to break.  It takes a lot of strength to say no to the hamburger. LOL

Third, Food that is low in calories and fat CAN BE DELICIOUS. I do not need to add salt to EVERYTHING THAT I EAT.

Fourth, I have an amazing support system of family and friends

Fifth, It is easier to find cute closes when you are skinny

Sixth, I sleep better at night

7 WEEKS DOWN - the rest of my life ahead of me.

Day 48 - Gina Day

Today my post is in honor of my friend Gina Myles. Gina passed away a year ago on November 1. She died of breast cancer. Gina was SO MUCH fun. She had a big smile and an even bigger personality.
She was always the last one in the mirror because of her makeup. Gina was a professional make up artist and founder of Let's Face It. I love my friend Gina. She was a true blue friend.

So here is to GINA - I hope she is sitting on a cloud enjoying the view.

Have a VEGGIE GOOD DAY,

Day 47 - Nuts about YOU

Feeling a little nutty today. You can chop up nuts and freeze them in plastic bags for later. Nuts pack a lot nutrients that you need to keep your engine running.

Cashews - perfect portion 14 - 75 mg of magnesium
Walnuts - perfect portion 14 halves - a serving of walnuts equals a daily dose of omega-3
Almonds - perfect portion 23 - help you digest food
Pistachios - perfect portion 49 - lower cholesterol and fight heart disease

Challenge: Go get some nuts.

Day 46 - Happy Halloween

Greetings Ghouls and Gobblins,

Happy Halloween. How are you going to spend your day? I am wearing a fifties style poodle skirt...my dog is going to be wearing a matching poodle skirt. LOL

I hope that you will have a great day of fun and friendship. I am giving out 100 calorie popcorn balls at my house and mini packs of M&Ms. I hope that you will find some low calorie alternative treats to give to your trick or treaters.

Day 44 - FROMAGE saved me

I had a really hectic day today. I ate breakfast on the run (between the kitchen and the car ) and I missed lunch. I was saved by the baby brie cheese and crackers in my WW snack pack. I was able to manage this yummie 2 point snack on the go.

Challenge: Find solutions to your crazy schedule trap doors. Plan for the times when you are not able to control the preparation of your meals. Practice ordering healthy food selections

Tip:  Stock up on portion size bowls and plates. The smaller the plate the smaller the portion.

Have a very VEGGIE GOOD DAY,
FitandSlim4ever

Day 43- Managing a cafeteria menu

Today, I had to figure out how to navigate a cafeteria menu. I was on the road all day without my WW snack pack. I started by doing a "walk about" around the cafeteria. I made a mental note that there were several food areas including a section with pre-packaged salads, a hot sandwich grill, a cold deli bar and a hot plate line with limited low calorie options. I opted for the final area - the fresh salad bar. I made a small green salad and selected a low calorie/fat free Italian dressing. I shared a cup of tuna fish with everyone at the table.

It was not the best lunch BUT it was a learning experience. I learned that successful lifestyle management requires discipline. I have to learn to make the best of "bad" food environments. There is always a solution. SO DO NOT ALLOW TRAVEL OR BUSINESS MEALS to derail your WW progress.

Tip: Always carry your own sip/water bottle.  Whenever possible pack a snack. I like snack size zip locks with walnuts and dried cherries, a cheese wedge or a Special K diet bar.

Challenge: Skip the chips. Skip the fast food. Skip the sweets and skip into a smaller pants size. LOL

Have a VEGGIE GOOD DAY,

Day 42 - Speed up when you see the Golden Arches

Today, I had a brief craving for fast food. I must be having junk food withdrawl. I am now coming to the end of week six so temptation is inevitable. I decided to do some research on fast food. OMG. I am now cured of my craving.

Here is what I found out about fast food meals:

1) One Chick Fil A Chicken Salad Cup = 9 WW points/350 calories/24 fat grams/1 gram of fiber
2) A Chick Fil A Sandwich = 9 WW points/430 calories/13 grams of fat/3 grams of fiber
3) Whopper with Cheese = 16 WW points/650 calories/39 grams of fat /770 mg of sodium/42 grams of Carbs
4) Big Mac = 14 WW points/590 calories/34 grams of fat/ 3 grams of fiber
5) Chicken Nuggets = 10 WW points/430 calories/25 grams of fat

Wow!!! I am no longer in the mood for fast food. I can opt for a delicious veggie burger with soy cheese for under 5 points with 12 sweet potato fries.

Challenge: Do your homework. What are you craving? Identify the problem and calculate the calories.

I finally understand the saying WE ARE WHAT WE EAT. I have had a lot of Whoppers, Big Macs and Chicken Nuggets in my lifetime...and look at me. I look like it. I actually started ordering the chicken salad cup as a low calorie alternative. The joke was on me. 430 calories worth of it.

Tip: The next time you are tempted to cheat do your homework. It helps.

Day 41 - Survival Kit

Yesterday my family celebrated my birthday. I brought my own appetizer and dinner. I had a glass of wine and a 1/4 cup of birthday cup (just a taste). I MADE IT and so can you. Plan ahead and pack your bento box. It works.

Day 40 - Another Chance To Get It Right

Today is my birthday and God is giving me another chance to get things together. This year I will put myself first. I will focus on the positive, look up instead of down and give thanks everyday for my wonderful family and incredible support system. This year I will "do me" instead of the me that others want me to be... I will stay true to my convictions, walk away from situations that do not yield effective results and keep SOME of my opinions to myself. This year I will cherish my family and friends, pray for those that do not wish the best for me AND let go of impossible/hopeless causes.

THIS YEAR I WILL "DO ME" AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

Have a very Veggie Good Day,

Day 39 - Pedometer

Today, I am feeling a little tired. I walked for an hour this morning followed by a twenty minute walk with the dog. Whew! That is a lot of work for a Saturday morning. I have learned that the only way to get rid of the pounds is to keep moving your feet. During my two walks I registered 8,732 steps on my pedometer.
My goal is to log at least 10,000 exercise steps (does not include regular steps) every day this week. I challenge  you to do the same. So get moving.

Tip:  Try using a bento box strategy. Put your food in plastic containers that have separate sections. I like the Glad plastic containers with 3 compartments. Fill the largest compartment with a vegetable, fruit or salad. Fill one of the smaller containers with a protein and the other section with a starch. Example: Last night I brought a bento box to a party. I filled the largest section with apple slices, one small section with a baby brie cheese wedge and the other section with fruit. I also brought a Jello Chocolate Pudding Cup for dessert. Presto! You will have a delicious WW points friendly snack to enjoy while your friends pig out on the BAD party food.

Challenge: Plan ahead for social events. Start practicing your food strategy before the holiday party season.

Tip: Snack size items like Laughing Cow baby cheese wedges, bags of apple slices, cheese and carrots make it easy to bring your own snacks to a social event. No excuses.

Question: What should you do when you are not able to bring your bento box? Good Question - LOL
Answer: Go for green. Look for food options like fruit, veggies and cheese. Stay away from processed foods and sugar. Worse case scenario...limit yourself to one bite or a taste. Last night my friend DH served some wonderful marbled cheese. I asked her to break off a small crumble for me to taste. She was happy to comply and support my WW efforts.

Be good to yourself and have a VEGGIE GOOD DAY,
FitandSlim4ever.

Day 38 - Slow motion

Today I am moving like a snail. I was really tired this morning. I had a big 8 point breakfast so I will have to cut back on lunch.

Breakfast Menu:

1 100 calorie Bagel (2 points) - I sprayed it with cooking spray and warmed it in the skillet
2 oz turkey sausage (2 points) - seared in skillet
1 slice Veggie Cheese (1 point)
1 egg (2 points) - cooked in skillet

Tip: Cooking spray is a good alternative to margarine. I spray it on everything.

Challenge: Get yourself moving on a blah day. I walked my dog to the veterinarian instead of driving the car. I am going to walk to the drugstore later today.

Have a Veggie Good Friday,
FitandSlim4ever

Day 37 - 6th Week on WW

I am pushing forward. Week 6 - Go Girl!!!!!

I am reviewing my WW history over the past 5 weeks. I have really learned a lot. For starters - It is critical that you find a standard menu of food options. I identified several meal and snack combinations and calculated the points value for each. I have a list on the fridge with the meal/snack and the points value. This will save you time and make points tracking a lot easier.

Tip: Smart Pasta is 3 points for 2 oz. It tastes good and has a lower carb count. I tossed it with a little fat free margarine and a pinch of pesto.

Tip 2:  WW chocolate cake snack is 1 point. Yummie

Day 35 - Rain Check

Today it is raining outside and I really do not feel like exercising...BUT I WILL. Exercise helps lift our spirits. So, do not let a rainy day get you off track.

Joke:  What is a mummy's favorite kind of music?

I love FIGS. A great low point snack tip - 1 baby wedge of laughing cow lite cheese with 3 low fat crackers, 3 crushed walnuts and 1 small fig divided in half. OMG.

Challenge: Whenever you feel discouraged focus on the end goal. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Now, get moving and do not forget the umbrella.

Have a VEGGIE GOOD DAY,

Day 34 - Making Groceries

Yesterday it took me almost 2 hours to complete my grocery shopping. I made a list at home and sorted everything by category. I used my WW points calculator to determine value before putting an item into the basket. Several items were discarded after I calculated the points value. :)  I am really amazed by the
"new"items on my grocery list. Satsumas, soy meat, veggie cheese, tofu and Swiss chard. Can you imagine? My basket was filled with all sorts of fresh vegetables and fruits.

Tip: It is really fun to browse the international section of the produce area. You will find interesting choices like cactus pears and California figs.  Try lean roast beef when you are craving a sandwich. It has a low points value. You can mix a 1/4 tsp each of horseradish and Dijon mustard to create a yummie sandwich spread. I added red onions and lettuce for filler. My sandwich was under 4 points when I used extra lean turkey pastrami.

Challenge: Get 8 hours sleep. This is a hard one.

Day 33 - What am I going to eat for lunch? Soup or not to Soup?

A cup of soup can set you back. I have learned the HARD WAY about the sodium content in soup. Please read the label carefully before you open a can or package of soup. One cup of soup may be loaded with sodium. Use low sodium broth, evaporated milk and buttermilk instead of higher calorie ingredients.

Idea:  Try Butternut Squash Fritter Fries. Cut a 2 1bs squash into halves and remove the seeds. Cut the halves into french fry shapes to equal 14 oz. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. Toss the squash in an egg mixture. The egg mixture should consist of 1/3 cup egg substitute and 1/2 tsp of vanilla. Shake off excess egg substitute. Coat fries with a mixture of 1 cup Fiber One bran cereal, 1/4 cup Splenda, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp salt. Lay fries on baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes and carefully flip fritters. Bake an additional 10 minutes or until the outsides are crispy and the inside is tender. Use 1/2 cup sugar free pancake syrup for dipping sauce. Yields 3 servings at a value of 2 points per serving on WW.

Challenge:  Park on perimeter of the parking lot.

Have a Veggie Good Day,

Day 33 - Get Creative with Pumpkin

Happy Sunday,

Pumpkins are high in protein and packed with nutrients. Pumpkins are also a full of free radical scavenging manganese, iron, phosphorus, and tryptophan.  George Mateljan, author of The World's Healthiest Foods says that pumpkin seeds also reduce the inflammatory symptoms of arthritis.  Go munch on some pumpkin seeds.

Tip:  Try almond butter. It is full of good4u.

Challenge: Go for Whole grain breads because the wheat flour milled to make the bread includes the entire grain which contains lots of fiber, vitamins and nutrients.

Day 32 - Learning something new everydayc

Hello Everyone,

I had an interesting conversation yesterday with my friend JR. We talked about belly fat v bottom half fat. Belly fat is visceral fat, a type that grows under the muscle layer around the internal organs. Bottom half fat is call subcutaneous fat, a type that forms under the skin above the muscle layer.  To learn more read Marie Savard's book Apples and Pears (Atria).

Challenge:  Eat a potato do not Be a potato. Get off the couch this weekend and take a long walk.

Tip: Pom seeds are so wonderful. I sliced open a pom last night and ate 1/2 cup of seeds and put the rest in the fridge. Yummlicious. Get  POMMED up today.

Love and Hugs and have a Veggie Good Day,

Month 2 - Day 31 / The Grapes of Wrath

Funny thing happened yesterday. I went to a wonderful event featuring a talented landscape artist named Pearl Fryar. After the event I was faced with the dreaded food table and champagne bar. My friend handed me a glass of champagne. I panicked. Should I drink the whole thing. How many  points are in champagne. It won't hurt to do it just this once. Well, I took 2 sips and carried my glass around for about 15 minutes. Finally, I set it down on a table and walked away. I managed to munch on some grapes and avoid the delicious looking pasta, cheese and DESSERT.

Whew!!! I made it through the grape vine. I can survive without sucking down the bubbly. I went home and fixed a tasty veggie burger and treated myself to a glass (or 2) of chardonnay. LOL.

Lesson learned:  Stay focused on a goal. Remind yourself of all the hard work and SWEAT equity you have invested in the past 30 days. I was tempted to eat at the reception but instead I pictured my JEANS. You remember my jean story from the first week. I WILL WEAR THOSE JEANS THIS CHRISTMAS.

Finally, I wish all of you a happy weekend. Sleep well and pray with all of your heart for peace and prosperity in our world.

Day 30 - ONE MONTH ON WW

Celebrate good times come on .... da dum da dum da da da - Ya Hoo!!! :)

I set a goal on day ONE. I promised to ride my bike to WW and Curves. Today I rode to WW and Curves. WHEW!!!! It was a journey. I am really proud of myself.

Special shout out to my WW partner GW. You are such an inspiration. Our leader said that our group is an amazing bunch of folks. I agree. Cheers to the WW morning gang. You all keep me going.

So, 30 days down - Years to go. Lifestyle changes are 4ever. FitandSlim4ever - no return - no surrender.

We can do it.  Hello to V for joining the bulge battle. We can do it.

So Finish Strong and Stay focused on FAITH, HOPE AND COURAGE.

Celebrating 1 month,
FitandSlim4ever

Day 29 - The slightest little thing can get you off track

Today our WW leader told us to never use the word DIET. We are not dieting. We are making lifestyle changes. Make a note.

Today I issued a SOS because of my allergy sneezemare. I was so under the weather that it was hard to breathe. I was so tempted to skip my workout. My good sense prevailed and I headed for Curves. You should always use an SOS when you feel tempted to skip your "me time." Call a family member or friend and ask for support. Yesterday, my brother was my lifeline.

Today - I tried soy nuggets. THEY DO NOT TASTE LIKE CHICKEN. A woman in the store told me that they were so good...blah blah blah. She must be kidding. Soy Nuggets taste like peanut butter patties rolled in flour and fried. Get the picture?

blessings to all,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 28 - Eating Clean

I learned a new term today called "eating clean." The Editor of "Off The Couch" (Tosca) promotes an eating clean lifestyle. She suggests that you refrain from eating anything your great grandmother would not recognize. Tosca also encourages her readers to cut back on products with bar codes. Tosca's magazine is full of testimonials and photos of people that have loss significant amounts of weight by eating clean.

Challenge: This week I will try to prepare the majority of my meals at home and eat clean. I will shop the outside walls of the grocery store and limit my "bad" carb intake.

Tip:  Oregano, Cinnamon, Thyme, Rosemary, Tumeric and Ginger are seasonings that are antioxidants. Season up a healthy heart.

Fruit Feature:  Pears are so good this time of year. Serve pear slices with walnuts, blue cheese and cranberries. Yummlicious.  This tasty threesome also makes a great sandwich with spinach on low fat wheat bread.

I hope things are going well for you?

Day 27 - Monday stuck on the freeway

Happy Week Everybody,

Today is Monday and I feel stuck on my freeway. I over slept...so tired. It felt like every muscle in my body went to a late night party AND had a hang over. WOW!! Have you ever felt stuck on your freeway?

I decided to jump start my day with a good breakfast. One 100 Calorie bagel with 1/2 serving of WW cream cheese, 1 egg mix (1/4 cup egg substitute, teaspoon minced green onion, 1/4 teaspoon veggie cheddar shredded cheese) and 1/4 teaspoon heirloom tomatoes.

I am not going to let my late start ruin my day. I am going to shift my workout to this afternoon. I will rearrange my schedule so that my exercise routine does not get off track.

I am having 1 cup of butternut squash for lunch with a green salad and heirloom tomatoes. A jello cup and a cup of sliced apples will be my snacks for the the day. Dinner will consist of a WW frozen dinner, green salad and a J41 veggie side.

Goal for this week:  Create a series of menus (points already calculated).

Tip:  Sip a low sodium vegetable drink to get more nutrients

Statistic: 64 % decrease in risk of breast cancer if you eat white button mushrooms daily (source Prevention Magazine/NOV issue)

Have a Veggie Good Day, I am moving onto the freeway.

Day 26 - O Swine OH Me?

I love pork. Today I was faced with the dreaded BACON. So I had 2 slices. What can I say....but O Swine is me. I am now through with BACON for the immediate future.

Tip:  Frozen Sweet Potato Fries are so good. Bake, season and enjoy.

See you later. I have to work off the BACON :)

Have a Veggie Good Day,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 25 - Saturdays

Saturday! Enough said. You have to work extra hard to stay focused. Today I was out running errands and hungry. I wasn't starving. I had a serious urge to go through the drive through at McDonalds. The golden arches looked like they were vibrating with a mental message "come in and get a iced coffee."  I took a moment to picture my jeans and short term goals. Viola. I was pulling up in my driveway.

When you are confronted with a test - picture yourself in an outfit 2 sizes smaller. It works. :)

I am off to enjoy the day.

Have a Veggie Good Day

Day 24- Keep it moving

The best way to get the pounds off is to keep it moving. That means mix up circuit moves alternating with aerobic activity.

Make sure you load up on protein before you start to exercise. I find that sometimes my energy dips halfway through a circuit. I try to keep a WW or Special K bar in my gym bag. I have also found that pre-sliced apples pack a powerful punch.

I was talking to my friend JR the other day about broccilini. It is rich and flavorful. Broccolini is a natural hybrid between broccoli and chinese kale. It has more vitamin A than regular broccoli.

Tip: Saute' broccolini with garlic or ginger for a delicious side dish.

Veggie of the Week. BEETS. Save the beet greens. Mix beet greens with blue cheese, hazlenuts and pasta for a delicious stir fry.

Note: Go for PURPLE POWER - Dark purple grapes are loaded with resveratol and quercetn. These two antioxidants protect cells from free radical damage and heart disease. The same antioxidants are found in red wine. So sip some Cabernet tonight. Yummie.

Have a Veggie Good Day,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 23 - New week

Week 4 and losing pounds. Yippie.

The key to WW is preparation. I am preparing foods in advance and storing individual servings in small plastic bowls. It really helps.

Tip: WW has some great recipes online and in the cookbooks.  Our WW leader encourages us to fill up on soup and other filling foods. Progresso has a 0 points soup that is very filling but watch out for the sodium. I have been making my own soups using low sodium chicken broth and vegetable broth.

Tip: WW cream cheese is great. Try making a fruit dip: 1 8oz bar of WW cream cheese, 1/4 cup Marshmallow Fluff, 3 tablespoons sugar free seedless raspberry preserves. Blend all ingredients and serve with a variety of fresh fruit. Yumlicious.

Have a Veggie Good Day,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 22 - Find the Cure

GET A Mammogram. It is time to find a cure for breast cancer. We could take all of the money that was spent looking for alleged weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and fund a global research effort to cure breast cancer.

I am at the end of week three on WW...only the rest of my life to go. I read something this week about positive thinking. You have to focus on the week ahead. One day, week and month at a time. I keep reading inspirational stories about women that have lost a significant amount of weight. I am so inspired by these stories.

Tip: When your weight loss struggle seems over whelming...GO TO THE MALL AND TRY ON A SMALLER SIZE...I promise you instant inspiration. LOL

Day 21 - What A Wonderful World

What a wonderful world. Oh Yeah!!!

Today, I really had to focus on managing my workout time, meetings and civic activities. In the midst of my stress I paused to look around at the beautiful day. Sometimes you really can miss the beauty of the forest because you are focusing on the trees. Trees are great but the flora and fauna of life is the absolute best part of the experience.

I challenge you to stop and smell the roses this week. Take a minute to thank God for our wonderful world.

Tip: The secret to diet success is loving yourself. Take time to enjoy the moment...and when you do - count to ten slowly and take a deep cleansing breath. It works. Try it.

Love and Peace, and have a Veggie Good Day,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 20 - Tuesdays are tricky

I think that Tuesdays are tricky because it the blah day of the week. Monday is a fresh start, Wednesday is a half point, Thursday is close to the weekend, Friday means freedom, Saturday is a free day and Sunday is a wrap up point. That is why I call Tuesday blah day. You are most likely to be VERY hungry on Tuesday. I can't explain it but it is really true.

I have some tips for surviving a blah day. First, get moving. Exercise will perk you up. Second, give yourself a new treat. A new blouse, earrings, shoes or a scarf will help lift your spirits. Third, experiment with a new dish. Fourth, use a lifeline and call a supportive friend. Fifth, PRAY for strength and finally - give yourself a pat on the back for making to another blah day.

Tip:  Sip Green Tea. It will change  your life. :)

Challenge:  Add 15 minutes to your workout. GO FOR IT!!!

Have a Veggie Good Day!

Day 19 -Sleep Needed

In order to make this diet work we need a good nights sleep. I did not get a good nights sleep because of noisy neighbors. I am hoping that they will turn it down a notch so that the nice people in the neighborhood can get some sleep.

Monday Morning and time to SIZZLE. We are going to have a great week. I made it through the weekend without blowing the plan. YEAH!!! Today I am ready to roll. I hope the party patrol keeps the noise down.

Challenge: 3 workouts every day this week. Morning, Afternoon and Evening.

Tip: Try chicken breast tenderloins instead of fillets for a juicier cut of meat. Also WW frozen anytime cheeseburger (4pts) is a great on the go option. Yummie.

Have a Veggie Good Day,

FitandSlim4ever.

Day 18 - GO SAINTS GO

Happy Sunday,

Today is a beautiful day. Not too hot and not too cold. I love it. It is the perfect day to pound the pavement. So the blog will be short today because I am headed for a walk.

Grab your sneakers and hit the road. Your heart will love you for it.

Tip:  Veggie Burgers can be heated in a warm skillet with no oil. Try it.

See you soon and have a Veggie Good Day.

FitandSlim4ever.

Day 17 - Social Graces

Hey Everyone,

Today I realized that dieters need to have certain social graces. There is an etiquette for dieting that I have learned the hard way. First, do not talk about your diet while others are eating a delicious fat filled lunch. It is really not appreciated. During a meal with non-dieters stay away from conversations about your fitness goals..unless someone has expressed an interest. You never know when someone might be annoyed with you for bringing up the subject. Dieting is a very sensitive area for some folks so tread carefully when discussing the topic.

Positive punch for the week. - Love thy enemies and Love thy frienemies. I will try to live by this rule ALL week.

Shout out to my friend Susan from church. She is having a baby today. GO GIRL.

Challenge for the Week - Green at every meal. Anything green that is grown in the soil...so no green jello does not count.

Super Saturday to All,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 16 - Travel Tips

Whew!!!!!

Today, I left home at 6:00 a.m. - flew to Houston - and flew back home. Upon my return I set to work on a print job that is due tomorrow morning. I knew this would be a busy day so I planned my food intake. I started the day with a WW breakfast sandwich with a tablespoon of non-fat margarine. I put a pack of raisins, a snack bar and a 100 cal pack in my purse in the event of a food emergency. It all worked out.
I was able to get a salad at the airport and ended the day with a veggie burger. CRISIS AVERTED.

I CAN DO THIS. SO CAN YOU.

Forward March. Jeans in sight...fat pants on the ground. LOL.

I bid you a Veggie Good Night.

FitandSlim4ever

Day 15 - Special People

Hello All,

Tonight, I went to a reunion of Troop Channel (long story). The troop is a group of dynamic ladies that were brought together because of a burning desire to change the place in which they live. The troop is a meeting place of mind and spirit where outspoken women can share their views...and respectfully disagree. It is a lot of fun to be with the ladies. Most importantly, they all support my WW struggle. My ears were ringing with positive thoughts and encouragement. Thanks Ladies for the friendship and support.

At WW we are taught to watch out for food pimps and food police. We all have a few of these folks in our life. The ones that comment on the contents of your plate. You are eating TOO much or not ENOUGH. Well, lucky for me the ladies in the troop do not fall in either category. I was able to munch on my salad without pressure to EAT. Yeah!!!! Girl Power is great.

So here is to great friends and wonderful opportunities.

Challenge: Meet someone new this week. Smile and take the high road. How about having a little sympathy and empathy for people that do not share your views.

Thought for the Week: Why can't we all just get along? Jesus ate with Jews and Gentiles. I know - stay away from controversial stuff on the blog. Well, I will save it for another day. Maybe after the mid-term elections.

In the meantime, Be Good to Yourself and Have A Veggie Good Day.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Day 14 - Let them eat cake...and anything else

Whew, tonight I made it through two events where lots of food was served. ALL I HAD WAS WATER. It wasn't bad. I tried to mingle and keep my mind off the food. I was actually asked to serve cake at one point. This was hard because it was delicious looking double fudge cake. I was not tempted. I stayed focused. I made it up another hill. It feels good to stick with the program. Tomorrow is another day but I will stay focused and hope for good and positive results.

Tonight. Dinner will be a veggie burger on wheat flat bread with a slice of veggie cheese and a dollop of fat free mayo.

Chant: Eyes on the PRIZE.

Have a Veggie Good Night,

FitandSlim4ever.

Day 13 - Blue Skies and Fluffy Clouds

Have you ever taken a long walk on a beautiful day? A day when the sun is shining and the sky is perfectly blue dotted with fluffy white clouds. Today I looked up at the sky and felt the sun on my face and finally it all clicked. A healthy lifestyle is not a punishment or death sentence. A healthy lifestyle is a wonderful bonus for having the discipline to stay focused on your diet. During my morning walk I pondered my long history of yo-yo dieting. I have tried numerous diets and programs. I usually drop weight only to regain some, all or more within six months to a year. Why? I think it is because my weight loss efforts are not part of a total lifestyle change.  I have to make some hard choices about my weight. Do I want to live long enough to enjoy sunny skies? That is the question.

During the next 11 months I will work hard to develop and maintain a healthier lifestyle. I hope you will follow my blog and support me to the finish line.

My challenge this week is to get through a demanding schedule of busy events without being tempted by the food table. Why is there food at EVERY meeting? Last night I ate lettuce while everyone else ate HUGE sandwiches on Italian bread (WITH CHIPS AND SUNDAES). Give me a little applause. I made it through the night. Tonight is another challenge.

Good Book: Terry McMillian's Getting to Happy. That's my goal...getting to happy.

Day 12 - Balancing hectic work days with diets

It is very hard to balance a hectic schedule with dieting.  I think that you really have to do a lot of planning and preparation.

Trick One - Slice/chop all of your vegetables and store in plastic storage bags
Trick Two - Stock up on diet snack bars (WW has lots of choices)
Trick Three - Keep a few frozen diet meals in the freezer for the  busy days when you are tired
Trick Four - Load up on veggies. I like the Just for One packs
Trick Five - Eggs are lifesavers...really!!!

Tip:  Take a sip bottle filled with water to meetings. You can get your daily intake of water while working

Send me some of your diet tricks. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Day 11- FALL IN LOVE WITH HEALTHY FOOD

Fall is such a wonderful time of year. I look forward to September because it feels like you are getting a fresh start for the last part of the year. Fall also means that colorful and healthy foods are in season. Have you ever tried a Pomegranate? You should select bright deep red poms. The bigger the better. Pistachios are another excellent choice. Pistachios pack a powerful punch and help protect the liver.

Tip: Having trouble sleeping? Eat a handful of walnuts and cherries. Let me know if it helps.

Challenge: I will hang "The Jeans" on the door and stare at them for 5 minutes. I will try to imagine myself wearing "The Jeans." (refer to earlier blogs for the jean story). I will repeat to myself -
I am going to get into "The Jeans." I challenge you to find something in your closet to to hang on the door.

I wish everyone a wonderful Sunday. New week - new start, new chance to make the most of our weight loss journey.

See you soon and have a Veggie Good Day,

FitandSlim4ever

Day 10 - Cleaning House

Today, I started cleaning out my pantry and fridge. I took all the pasta and put it in a bag. My niece Cherie is the recipient of pasta in every shape and size. Bon Appetite, Cherie.

It feels really good to give away food. It felt like a wonderful cleansing experience. There are so many people in the world in need of food so why hold onto food that you do not need.

Today was a fun day. I went to a breakfast meeting and managed to have 2 poached eggs and 1/2 slice of toast...while dining with people EATING BACON. OMG. I love bacon. I was proud of myself for resisting the BACON. After breakfast I went to a meeting where my friends were eating sandwiches and dessert. I ate before I went to the meeting. It really helped. I managed to stay focused while my friend TA munched down on this wonderful chocolate delicacy with marshmallow and nuts. Thanks friend.

Tonight I walked with my friend GW for 2 hours. Go GW. We are really enjoying our fitness walks.

Well, it has been a long day so I bid you goodnight. Sweet Dreams and Tomorrow have a Veggie Good Day.

DAY 9 - TODAY IS A GREAT DAY

What is the first thought to pop into your head in the morning? Do you give thanks for having another day on the planet? Do you fall on your knees and ask blessings for the safety and health of your family? Whatever your prayer, whatever your hope - start out thanking God for a GREAT DAY.

Two weeks into WW and I give thanks for a great day. I am thankful for the opportunity to get a "do over." A second chance to do things differently, to make better choices ... to select the high road...to choose  health and fitness over obsisty and despair. Today, I celebrate new beginings and fresh starts.

Here is to a new week on WW. Pray for me. I go forth with a humble heart and a spirit filled with might.

Tip:  Flavor soups with low sodium chicken, veggie or beef brotth.

Action chant: Move it. U gotta move it. Motivate and Move it.

Have a great weekend. Happy TGIF.

Blessings and have a Veggie Good Day,

Day 8 - Week 2 /So Far So GoR

Yeah for Me. I have finished my first week on WW. I actually lost weight. GO GIRL !!! Now, forward march. My WW leader told us that the program does not control us - we control the plan. In other words - We have enough flexibility to put together winning menu plans that suit our individual taste. So, this week I am going to focus getting into a routine.  More on this task to follow. :)

Quick Lunch idea for last nights grilled shrimp - 1/2 cut shrimp chopped, mixed with 1/2 blue crab meat, 1/3 mined green onions, a dash of seasoning,  1 tablespoon of low fat mayo, 1 tablespoon of tofu cream cheese, 1 1/4 cup colorful bell peppers sliced or chopped, one cup raw spinach. Mix shrimp, crab, seasoning, mayo, onions and cream cheese together. Serve over spinach leaves and garnish with bell peppers and cucumber slices.  For a side dish serve "Just for One" veggie serving. (1 pt).  You can add a 1/4 tablespoon of Remoulade sauce for color and taste. Remoulade is about 80 cal/7g fat for a tablespoon so use carefully.

I feel very good about completing a week on my new program. I look forward to sharing my progress in the weeks and months to come. I hope you will stay tuned and support my weight loss journey with INSPIRATIONAL IDEAS AND MESSAGES. POSITIVE VIBES ONLY.

Thought for the week:  My pastor says that we are called to do three things 1) do no harm 2) do good and 3) stay in love with God. Sounds easy right? Wrong. I am going to try getting through the week living by these three simple rules. I challenge you to do the same.

Peace and Joy to you and have a Veggie Good Day!

Day 7 - Finding Motivation in a Camp Fire Song

Do you remember sitting in a circle at camp and singing "It only takes a spark to get a fire going and soon all those around will warm up in its glowing..." I used to love that song...at the end we would shout "and I want to pass it on." Join me in humming or singing the camp fire song today. Sing it in the shower, car, gym, grocery, office - WHEREVER. When you sing the song you must exude positive energy. You are probably asking yourself - What does this have to do with dieting? Well, I am glad you asked. Dieting is all  about positive energy, state of mind and motivation.

REPEAT AFTER ME...Today, I will be positive. I will exercise, meditate, plan my meals and make a difference. Today - I will be a SPARK.  I will not be dragged down by negative forces, I will not be defeated by food. Today - I will FINISH STRONG.

Tip - eat an avocado (1/4 for WW) it is full of Good4u.  Shout out to my friend Gail for reminding me that "Life is not a dress rehearsal"

Now start singing and have a Veggie Good Day.

Peace and Blessings,  FitandSlim4ever.

Day 6 - Finish Strong

Who Dat?

FINISH STRONG - I am going to adopt the motto of the New Orleans Saints. Finish Strong. I will FINISH STRONG this week.  The Saints won the Superbowl SO I can win at weight loss.

I am half way through the first week. It has been a lot of fun. Yesterday, I went to the grocery store to stock up on veggies. I bought sweet potatoes, zucchini, squash, broccoli and bell peppers. I plan to mix and match these veggies with the spinach, salad and mushrooms already in the fridge.

One fast solution for getting your daily veggie supply (5/day) is a veggie pita. I toss 1 tablespoon of oil with 1/2 cup of broccoli slaw, 1/4 cup of sprouts, 2 cucumber slices and a dash of salad seasoning. Add the veggie mixture to a pita and voila. You will have a delicious veggie pita for lunch. Serve the pita with a cup of low sodium/fat soup for a nutritious and filling lunch. You can also use one serving of wheat bread.

Tip:  Try Hellman's low fat mayo. I find that it beats other brands in the fat/calorie count.

Action:  I was tired and stressed out yesterday but I dragged myself to Curves. I managed to make it through the circuit a few times. I ended the day by taking a long walk with the dog.

When I am tempted to skip my workout I will remember to FINISH STRONG. I am going to tape a piece of paper with FINISH STRONG on my bathroom mirror.  I challenge you to do the same.

To my fellow warriors in the battle against the bulge...live life to the fullest, pray without ceasing, laugh loud and often and MOST IMPORTANT. Be good to yourself.

Peace and best wishes for a Veggie Good Day,

Day Five - Getting the hang of things

I survived the weekend.

Sunday night was a little hard. I dipped into my extra points to cover my pizza. It was worth it. I ate delicious pizza made with a wheat crust, uncured pepperoni and organic cheese while watching the new HBO series Boardwalk.  It is not as good as True Blood. I miss Bill and Sookie.

Sunday afternoon I walked more than 3.2 miles. I walked from my house to the riverfront where I met my friend Gail. Together we walked 2 miles in the park. I also walked the dog twice for at least 20 minutes. Thanks to my big brother Rod for giving me the pedometer.

Today, I had a WW frozen breakfast sandwich (4 points). The sandwich preparation is a little tricky. I find it best to take the sandwich apart and microwave each section separately. Bread (10 sec), Meat and Egg 20 sec each. I also add a tablespoon of low calorie butter substitute. The breakfast sandwich is a great option when you are running late in the morning.

I think the trick to staying on WW is planning and preparation. It is critical that I spend time working on menus and developing a "food routine."  My goal is to develop a five day meal plan with a variety of menus that are filling AND satisfying. This will help me stay on plan. I can also save my favorites online at WW.com. Recipes wanted so please share with us.

News Alert.  Judge Glenda Hatchett's new novel hit the newsstands today. Please pick up a copy. The book is called "Dare to Change." It will inspire you.

Happy dieting and have a Veggie Good Day,

Day Four - Getting Ready for An Amazing Week

Good Sunday to All,

This morning I received an email from a wonderful lady named Myrna. The email contained a message of inspiration that is right on point. Thank you Miss Myrna for jump starting my day.

Mark 5:26. ...and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse ,

Thought for the Day: Your Journey Will Have Obstacles

Reflection for the Day: Stay Focused On God And Go Forward

There is much to celebrate in the life of the woman with "an issue of blood". She pressed her way, touched the hem of the garment of Jesus, and was healed. Her journey ended in victory. While we rejoice in her healing we cannot ignore the years she suffered, twelve long years in which she simply grew worse. Her secret was simple. She stayed focused on the Lord and continued forward.

Your journey to success will have many obstacles. They will come from every direction but you must remain focused on the Lord. As you continue forward in the direction that He leads you you have no need to doubt. Remain assured that God's promise will be fulfilled.

Four days into WW and I can share a few lessons:
  • Walking with a friend helps
  • Follow the rule of Thermodynamics - "burn more calories than you take in"
  • Use the 35 extra points that help you splurge without getting totally off base
  • Chop up fresh vegetables and keep them in ziplocks. This will speed up prep time
  • Buy a produce keeper from Walmart. Keeps fruit and lettuce VERY fresh
  • WW peach or strawberry yogurt is 1 point and will fill you up
  • When you are tempted to cheat use a lifeline and call a relative or friend for support.
  • Butter buds can be added to help season food
  • Tofu ice cream is so refreshing and a good evening snack. I like the ice cream sandwich
This week - positive energy.

Goal: Move it and lose it.  Until tomorrow have a veggie good day.

Day 3 - Staying focused over the weekend

Happy Saturday,

Last night I tried a recipe for Weight Watcher's enchiladas. It turned out to be a hot mess. I used veggie cheese and 2% velveta. The low cal tortillas were hard and the veggie cheese does not melt well in the oven. OMG. Never again. There is nothing worse than wasting your precious points on a bad dish. Needless to say I was still hungry so I had a 1/2 of banana. This morning I ate egg substitute with 1/2 cup of mixed mushrooms, broccoli florets, green onion, white onion, bell peppers and a 1/2 slice of American cheese.

The hard part about dieting is keeping focused and motivated. I am going select a piece of clothing that does not fit. Let's call this piece of clothing my "tier one emotional goal." My tier one emotional goal will serve as a daily motivator.

I have chosen  a fabulous pair of jeans as my tier one emotional goal. I love these jeans. My goal is to wear these jeans during the Christmas holidays. On the day I wear my jeans the bad enchilada dinner will be a distant memory...ahead blue skies, lots of vegetables and a new healthy lifestyle.

I KNOW I CAN DO IT.

Activity for today:  I spent 1 hour cleaning up leaves, pulling leaves and sweeping the patio. Later today I am going to clean rust off of my bicycle and take a walk by the river.

Tonight, I am having grilled shrimp with a salad for dinner.

My theme song.  I will survive as long as I have food to eat I know I'll stay alive. I have all my family and friends and lots of support. I will survive.

Blessings and Peace to All

Day 2 - I am on my way

Oh happy day. I am into the second day of my weight watchers journey. This morning I had a delicious 5.5 pt breakfast consisting of a 1 egg substitute omelet with spinach, mushrooms and grape tomatoes. I tossed 5 spinach leaves, 2 grape tomatoes sliced vertically and a tablespoon of mushrooms in a saute pan coated with cooking spray. I added 1 1/2 slice of american cheese and I served 1 oz of turkey sausage (6 small round slices) on the side.  1 oz of meat is NOTHING :)

1egg - is 2 pts, 1 tablespoon quick egg substitute is 1/2 pt, 1/2 slice of american cheese single is 1//2 pt, 1 oz turkey sausage is 1.5 pts, the spinach, tomato and   mushrooms have 0 points.  Voila.

My breakfast was delicious and very satisfying.

As for action. I walked the dog this morning and I plan on going to CURVES later today.  It is not so hard to be healthy.

Prayer for today. I pray for the courage to keep moving and losing. I pray for my family and friends. I pray for those that are so supportive of my efforts (shout out to GW, JR, TA, LM, DH and Dad for lifting me up in love, friendship and support). My friend Diane always says "when you get ready to do it - YOU WILL DO IT." Thanks D for being such an inspiration. I admire your workout ethic.

To those that elect to scorn or laugh at my blog. Who cares. Positive people welcome. All others see the haters blog.
Peace and Blessings, Fitandslim4ever  in progress.

Day One on Weight Watchers

Dear Kindred Spirits,

Today, I started Weight Watchers. I was a little scared and intimidated by the discussion about counting points. Our group leader was great. I got excited just listening to her 50 pound weight loss story.

So, starting today - September 16, 2010 I hereby commit to blog about my weight loss journey for one year.

I will not tell you my starting weight. My mother used to say that "a woman that tells her weight and age will tell anything."

So, stay tuned. This morning I had an omelet made of one egg and 1 tablespoon of egg substitute. I used cooking spray to season the pan and I added a pinch of pepper. Before removing the omelet from the pan I added 1/2 slice of american cheese. I also had 1 turkey frank cut in half. I must admit. It was very tasty. I had a Special K fruit crisp for my morning snack.

Yours truly, FitandSlim4ever
